Granite Island

Posted upon it is the Granite Island Lighthouse, also known as Granite Island Light Station.

Impressions? The "rock" has a lot of dimensional character with its cliffs and cravasses, "tide" pools and rocky bays. Approaching the island by boat from a distance reminds a little of St. Michaels Mt in Cornwall. The building is a 2,408 sq. ft. stone dwelling circa 1868 with: oil house, out-house, fog-bell tower and steel light tower. The 2.49 acre island, and light-house quarters is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Despite its remoteness, and because of its picturesque location, form and color it is often the subject of photographs, and drawings.

Although the island is privately owned, an automated aid to navigation on a gray steel tower (with a 96 feet (29 m) focal plane) and a range of 10 miles (16 km) is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. Its characteristic is a white flash every 6 seconds.

Granite Island Light is one of 149 lighthouses in Michigan. Michigan has more lighthouses than any other state.
