Cruise Liner continues Haiti Stopover

Royal Caribbean Cruise Liners have made the controversial decision to continue their stopover in Haiti despite the recent earthquake disaster.

Cruise Liner passengers will disembark at a private beach in Haiti as part of their Caribbean cruise holiday. Royal Caribbean Cruises leases the area from Haiti, to provide cruise liner passengers with a day of beaching and water sport activities off the ship. The area is a lush peninsula featuring five unspoiled beaches, fenced off and patrolled by armed guards. The company has invested $50 million into developing the facitlities on property - one of the largest foreign investmens in Haiti.

Royal Caribbean International have defended their decision to continue to use the Haiti stopover despite the suffering that continues just an hour drive away. They say that Haiti needs the income they earn from the company's use of the land. To divert the stopover to another location would deprive Haiti of much needed income at a time they need it most.

The cruise liner has also pledged to help with deliveries of much needed relief supplies and personnel. Forty pallets of rice, beans, powdered milk, water and canned foods were delivered last Friday, and more will be delivered on two subsequent ships.

Cruise Liner passengers are divided about the Haiti stopover. While many have said they will enjoy the beach, others have chosen to remain on board saying that they are uncomfortable having fun so close to an area coming to grips with a disaster of this magnitude. It is definitely a controversial step to continue the Haiti stopover.
