The botanical gardens date back to the 1830's and are situated on 10 acres of delightfully landscaped gardens that stretch from the River Ouse right up to the back of York Art Gallery. Many developments have taken place over the years and now include a fern garden, a butterfly border and American prairie border, a rockery extension and a new astronomy border that is conveniently located next to the York Observatory, another attraction managed by York Museums Trust. The botanical gardens are home to grey squirrels, flocks of pigeons and many more species that are illusive, but can be sighted. Botanical gardens provide wonderful and interesting outings for families, with plenty to see and do.
