Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society in Walnut Creek, San Francisco Bay, United States | Railway | Model Railway

The Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society (WCMRS) in Walnut Creek, California, United States, operates the Diablo Valley Lines Railroad. This model railroad is HO scale and has standard gauge, narrow gauge, and interurban (overhead electric) freight and trolley lines.
The Walnut Creek Model Railroad Society is proud to be one of the most mountainous layouts, and one of the largest exclusively HO scale lines in the United States. And we have overhead interurban traction and HOn3 narrow gage, too.
At our shows in Walnut Creek, California, we invite you to visit a permanent 54 x 32 foot layout with over 4,300 feet of hand laid track on 175,000 individual ties with more than 340 turnouts all enclosed in a building specially designed and constructed by the club mabembers. Mountains rise to 10 feet above the lowest track level, and the railroad may be viewed from all sides. Under normal operating conditions it requires about 45 minutes for one train to complete a single circuit of the mainline.
We feature nostalgic steam locomotives, modern diesels, a narrow gauge logging road, and electric traction lines.
The equipment operated on the layout represent periods from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present time. Most of the structures modeled date from the 1950's when the transition from steam to diesel motive power was in full swing in the USA.
The layout contains standard gauge track and narrow gauge track. Standard gauge is what most people know about when thinking about real life trains. This layout has 3 foot narrow gauge; the distance between the rails is 3 feet. This was used in the mountains where there wasn't room to have the standard gauge (wide) tracks.
