Kimars Charters

Kimars Charters in Au Train Lake, Alger County, United States | Boating

Each boat belonging to Kimars Charters in Au Train Lake, United States can accommodate up to 6 people. Our boats meet Michigan and U.S. Coast Guard Regulations and are insured. Boats are equipped with cabin area and restroom facilities. All fishing tackle and equipment are included in the charter fee; however you are always welcome to bring your own rod and reel along.

The Shelter Bay Flats, what we call our "local" trip, are located just 3 miles north of the dock in Shelter Bay.

This trip is all trolling with downriggers and wire line rigs; all tackle is provided. Lake trout make up the majority of the catch but salmon and steelhead are not uncommon.

Kimars Charters was started in 1945 by brothers Al & Sonny Kimar. We are still in the same location in Au Train Lake today.

In 1967, Al's son Dave took over the fishing operations and is still "on the job" today. Captain Dave has expanded the business over the years by hiring additional captains and adding more charter boats to Kimars Charters.

In the early days, trips were limited to the Shelter Bay area. Back then the boats were made of wood, had small engines, and low fuel capacities. In 1978, Captain Dave bought a new boat and was then able to venture out to new locations. It was at this time that he began making regular trips to Stannard Rock, the first charter to do so!

In 1992, Captain Dave's son-in-law, Ric O'Neill, obtained his captain's license. Captain Ric has been running a boat ever since. Also in 1992, we began making trips to the Big Reef and now make numerous trips there each year.

Along with our charter fishing we also have a resort on site with accommodations for our fishing crews in Au Train Lake. The resort was built by Al and Sonny in the 40s with several original cabins still on site, along with two new cabins built in the 90s.
