United Arab Emirates, Modern Face of the Middle East.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a federation of seven emirates located on a peninsula on the Persian Gulf. (An Emirate is a territory ruled by a hereditary emir, or prince.)

The federation of the United Arab Emirates was started in 1971. It consists of the emirates of Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah. Together these emirates form a single nation boasting a modern infrastructure and high GDP. While the interior is largely hostile sandy or rocky desert, the coastline sees the focus of commercial activity and some of the worlds most ambitious engineering projects.

The strategic location of the UAE peninsula means that the region is an important trading zone connected to the other Gulf states, East Africa and the southern coast of Asia.
