Lochcarron

The name Lochcarron is also applied to the collection of small settlements strung out along Loch Carron, an arm of the sea on the west coast of Ross and Cromarty. The village currently has two petrol stations, a small supermarket open 7 days, a post office, a branch of the Halifax Bank of Scotland, a library and medical centre, a number of gift shops and a Highland Council service point.

Throughout the 1980's large oil platforms were assembled at the nearby Kishorn Yard, this led to considerable wealth generation for the area and a boon for local employment. Unfortunately, with the north sea oil industry shrinking and production declining, the yard was forced to downgrade and eventually close for good. Many attempts have been made to restart the yard in some form, including the dismantling or mothballing of old or no longer needed rigs, and indeed new production for the oil fields to the north west of Scotland.

Currently the areas biggest employment sectors include crofting, the tourist industry and fish farming.
