Ulvon

The island Ulvon in the Swedish High Coast consists of two islands - the north and south Ulvon. In the sound between the islands, you'll find Ulvöhamn, once Norrlands biggest fisher-harbour. Ulvöhamn was founded by fishermen from Gävle in the early 15:th century and have ever since that time been an important factor for the Swedish fishing industry. On the Northern Ulvon today about 50 people livre here year around, but in the 50:s when fishing was a big working deal, about 350 persons were livied here, most of them in Ulvöhamn but even in the small villages, Sörbyn and Norrbyn up north on the Northern island. Ulvon is mostly known to be the birthplace of fermented herring. Today there is a very small production of this Swedish delicacy, The last saltery was closed in 1985, but with a little luck you can buy a really Ulvon-made can of fermented herring or at least have a taste of it when you visit the island.

Real Ulvo-fermented herring is produced by a retired fisherman, mr Julius Söderberg, but also by Ruben Madsen, Ulvon own clown entertainer. The old Chapel is one of the places worth visiting in Ulvon This is the oldest wooden building in the Västernorrland County, built 1622 by fishermen from Gävle. The chapel has very beautiful roof- and wall paintings made by Roland Johansson-Öberg in 1718. Responsible for the chapel is the County Museum (Länsmuseet) in Härnösand. During the tim June 15 - August 15 you can have a guided tour in the chapel at 1.45PM.
