You will see most of them in the garden too, but Ulva is a special place and was once the hub of Island society, with its own post office which still stands today. You should spend half a day on Ulva, walking the excellent tracks, on your own or with a local guide. Or why not take a fishing trip - with catch guaranteed (we'll be happy to cook it for you) - or hire a kayak and glide among the seals and penguins who will accept you as part of nature. If you are energetic, you will be keen to explore the bush tracks, ten minutes to ten days or more, with lots of comfortable huts for overnight stays. Stewart Island is bigger than Singapore but only a tiny corner is inhabited and there are only thirty kilometres of road so you must be prepared to walk, if you want to gain a real knowledge of the hinterland. The 'Coast to Coast' trip is worth considering. You fly to Mason Bay and land on the beach. Then you walk, literally from coast to coast at the island's narrowest point, finishing your 4 to 5 hour walk at Freshwater Hut, where a water taxi picks you up and brings you home.
