Guaruja is a municipality in the Sao Paulo state of Brazil. The population in 2006 is 305.171, the population density is 1,969.47/km² and the area is 143 km². This place name comes from the Tupi language. The population are highly urbanized.
Guaruja is located in the Santo Amaro island. Its main economic sources are seasonal tourism and port related activities.
Guaruja is a preferred weekend destination for the wealthy families in Sao Paulo, that can get there driving in less than an hour (through the Imigrantes highway). Traffic gets heavy during the evening in 3-day holidays. The beach of Enseada is a hotspot for jetskying.
Guaruja has a borough called Vicente de Carvalho, in homage to the Parnassianist poet.

Guaruja is a beautiful city about 100km from Sao Paulo, and a ferry ride from Santos.
The city gets very crowded in the summer, but even the warm winters are great there. Worth a visit on New Years eve. A big gathering on the beaches at midnight to see in the coming year with LOUD fireworks, and see the ritual of placing offerings, wine, candles, flowers etc. to the spirits.
