Matera dates back to the Middle Ages when Byzantine and Benedictine monks built rock-hewn churches and monasteries into what are now called the Sassi – literally stones – an intricate series of terraced caves, and later inhabited by farmers, fashioning homes, stables and shops into what is now a significant troglodyte settlements. Nowadays this is a great attraction to visit and the town boasts many hotels, restaurants and bed and breakfasts.
