Morciano di Leuca

Morciano di Leuca is a town and comune in the Italian province of Lecce in the Apulia region of south-east Italy.

The origins of Morciano di Leuca probably go back to the IX century AD with the destruction of the city of Vereto for Morciano di Leuca of Saracens, when escaped took refuge in the countryside near giving rise to Morciano and Patù. The name may mean "place or storage of goods" or even more likely "murex," the rock of which is made the ground "Murgia." In 1190 Tancredi King of the Two Sicilies gives Sinibaldo Sambiasi the Feudo of Morciano, the house remains the family until the thirteenth century, moving then to a certain Riccardus Murchano perhaps Angevin of origin. The feud then in 1316 to Guiscardo Sangiorgio, who sell in 1335 to Walter VI of Brienne, in 1486 James Antoglietta to sell the Sambiasi move to Castromediano 1642 and in 1848 Giuseppe Valentini buy the feud for 2200 ducats. Morciano di Leuca has a Marina Torre Vado and a Barbarano del Capo fraction.
