Sosua is set in a sheltering horseshoe inlet on the north coast of the Dominican Republic approximately 25km east of Puerto Plata and 11km west of Cabarete. A typical Caribbean town with a Spanish Flavor Sosua has, reputedly, the best beach on the Silver Coast of the Dominican Republic, with fine white sand and a multitude of palm trees to laze under. Situated at the rear of the beach are a large assortment of small cafes/bars, souvenir vendors and also several public bathrooms (there is a small charge for their use but well worth it to use a clean facility). There are several beach vendors who will rent you a beach lounger, umbrella and small table and will also run to the cafes/bars to get you refreshments for you. Sports: Snorkeling Moderate amount of fish near the coral reef makes for decent underwater photo opportunities. You can see flounder, parrot fish, grouper, porcupine and dozens of other varieties. You can easily snorkel from the beach to the reefs. Taking a tour allows you to reach reefs further out and to focus on having a good time in the water, as your valuables are guarded. Scuba The better scuba diving opportunities are to the West and the East of Sosua. Several dive shops offer varied excursions. Divers of all levels can enjoy shallow reefs, shipwrecks, freshwater cave diving, deep water diving and possible encounters with humpback whales and other large creatures. Summer air temperatures can hit the mid 90s, while winter temperatures drop to the 70s. Water temperatures range from the high 70s to low 80s, and visibility ranges from 70 to 100 feet.
