Taipei County is located in northern Taiwan and encircles Taipei City. It is south of Keelung, north of Taoyuan and west of Yilan. Its abbreviation in Taiwanese is Pak-koān and in Mandarin is Bei Xian. It has been approved to be administered directly under the Executive Yuan of the Republic of China.

Taipei County has a wide range of historic, natural and cultural attractions. Historic attractions include Fort Santo Domingo and Qing dynasty remnants in Danshuei, and the old mining towns of Jioufen, Jinguashi and Jingtong in the east. The most famous temple in Taipei County is probably the Zushih Temple in Sansia. Sansia also contains the historic Minquan Street. There are numerous notable museums, such as Yingge's Ceramics Museum, Yonghe's Museum of World Religions, Bali's Shihsanhang Museum of Archaeology, Pinglin's Pinglin Tea Museum and the Ju Ming Museum.

Natural attractions include the Wulai's and Shifen's waterfalls, Wulai's hot springs, geological formations in Yehliu, and hiking in Guanyinshan, Wulai, Pingsi and along the northeast coast. There is also a popular beach in Fulong.
