muZEEum in Vlissingen, Walcheren, Netherlands | Museum

You can find the maritime Museum of Zeeland muZEEum in Vlissingen, the maritime stronghold of Zeeland, with its seafront, harbours and shipbuilding.

Vlissingen is the only town in the Netherlands which has its historical centre right by the sea. The muZEEum is located in that historical centre, with a view of the sea.

Present-day muZEEum was opened to the public in the autumn of 2002 and is heir to the Stedelijk Museum Vlissingen, which was founded in 1890 and was one of the oldest Museums of the Netherlands.

The Stedelijk Museum Vlissingen was housed in a former town house from 1881 in Bellamypark. It was primarily a historical Museum which focussed on the maritime and historical past of Vlissingen. Paintings alternated with construction fragments, tiles and archaeological finds.

Thanks to the unique links between the Museum buildings there are now two gardens: the lower garden with its vertical pond and the upper garden. A quiet spot where history is tangible, but combined with contemporary design by Govert Visser.
