Welcome to the Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, Tenby, UK Regions, United Kingdom. The Tenby Museum stands as the oldest independent Museum in Wales, serving the community since 1878. It was founded by a self appointed committee of local retired professional gentlemen some of whom were also amateur naturalists or archaeologists. They wished on behalf of the community to display predominantly local collections of natural history, geological specimens and archaeological finds. In 1878 The National School (built in the 1830s) became vacant, allowing the Museum trustees to acquire the building for the collections.
It has naturally seen some changes since its instigation with numerous facilities and services to offer including family history research, educational programmes, events, talks and workshops. The notion of a collection representing the locality still applies.
Also available are Research and educational facilities, library, collection and archive by appointment and special projects and activities for young visitors and adults including storytelling and prearranged events.
The Museum has access for disabled visitors including two lifts. There is a hearing loop available at the reception desk and large print texts in two of the galleries.
The Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, UK Regions, also offers storytelling sessions for schools, available in both English and Welsh with one of our bilingual volunteers. We also have special events such as handling sessions for National Archaeology Day and workshops as well as Christmas events for schools.
