Spandau Citadel

Spandau Citadel in Berlin, Berlin, Germany | Fort

Welcome to the Spandau Citadel a  Renaissance Fortress in Berlin, Germany.  The Spandau Citadel is one of the most important and best preserved Fortresses in Renaissance Europe.   In the 16th century new weapons attacks had made the castles useless so Elector Joachin Spandauer II built a new Italian style Fortress castle, with water surrounding the entire Fortress.
During bombardment in 1813 by Napoleon's troops, the gatehouse was severley damaged.   In 1839 it was redesigned in a classical style and is now a permanent exhibition at Spandau Citadel, depicting the history of the castle.
After the Second World War Spandeau Citadel served many purposes, however Rudolf Hess was never imprisoned here, as has falsely been claimed.
Today Spandeau Citadel is only used for cultural purposes in Berlin .
The Spandeau Citadel is often the scene of large banquets and open air concerts.
Built as a Fortress to protect Berlin from aggressors, the original Spandeau Citadel dates back to the late 1100s. After a strenuous climb to the top of its tower, visitors are greeted by spectacular views of the rivers Spree and Havel. The finished Fortress, Italian in design, was completed in 1594 and has had many uses in succeeding centuries, including that of a prison. Tours are available on weekends.
