Millom History
Millom was just a few villages and farms until the discovery of iron ore at Hodbarrow, in 1855, Millom then became a prosperous town with a population of more than 10,000. The town was devastated when the mine closed in 1968 today, only the remains of two lighthouse towers and the walls of a windmill are left.

RSPB reserve
The now disused iron workings have become nature reserves and are home to several significant rare species. Hodbarrow, originally the site of an iron ore mine, is now an RSPB Reserve, home to Wigeon, Goldeneye, Red-Breasted Merganser and Pintail. The more unusual Greenshank, Curlew, Sandpiper and Black-Tailed Godwit can also be seen here. The Little Terns, arrive in mid-April. Click here for more details

The elusive Natterjack Toad and other rare protected species live at Hodbarrow, alongside Marsh, Spotted and Pyramidal Orchids. The colony of Bee Orchids, of which there have been more than 2000 in some years, is the largest in Cumbria.

Folk Museum
Millom's most famous son is poet and author Norman Nicholson (1914 - 87). A new stained glass window memorial has been placed in St. George's Church, where he worshipped. The town's Folk Museum charts Millom's development as an industrial centre for iron production. There is also a room devoted to Norman Nicholson who lived here for his entire life.

RAF Millom Museum
Charting the history of RAF Millom (No2 OAFU), RAF Walney (10 AGS), and RAF Cark (N01 SPTU). Aero Engines, Whirlwind Helicopter, Flying Flea and much more are on display plus a photo archive of over 1,500 photographs.

Millom today provides access to unspoilt golden sands with unrivalled panoramic views of the nearby Lakeland hills and fells. It boasts the facilities of a town and the opportunities of the unspoilt countryside.
