Madoc Yacht Club in Porthmadog, Gwynedd, United Kingdom | Club

Welcome to Madoc Yacht Club, Porthmadog, United Kingdom. MYC Rowing is as it sounds, Madoc Yacht Club Rowing.
We are a group of like minded individuals who got together in June of 2001 following an idea by Club members Bill Piper and Dr. John Jones-Morris to bring rowing and eventually traditional boats back to Porthmadog with a vengeance.
Our boat is a Celtic Longboat, a traditional design brought up to date in GRP by Dale Sailing of Pembrokeshire. With four people rowing, plus the Cox and weighing in at only 150 kg ‘Fleetwing’ can tear along at seven knots, when everyone pulls their weight! Although normal cruising speed is about 5 knots. The Celtic Longboat is the boat used by the Welsh Amateur Rowing Association for racing. This is based currently around south and west Wales, with most activity in the Cardigan Bay area. We are trying to change this however and interest is growing with a Club based in Pwllheli and a well established Club in Bull Bay on Anglesey.
Since the formation of our Club we have completed the bi-annual Celtic Challenge race across the Irish sea in a respectable 6th out of 14 with a time of 15 hours and 46 minutes, the only “all newcomer” entry.
We also enjoy an excellent social scene in Porthmadog and have the use of all the Madoc Yacht Club facilities as members.  Rowing is mentally as well as physically demanding and is an excellent way to keep fit and compete or just enjoy the water and team spirit.
