Hotel Sole · SURROUNDINGS & ITINERARIES
FRASASSI CAVES
Frasassi caves, discovered in 1971 by a group of speleologists from Ancona and opened to the public in 1974, today represent one of the major tourist attractions in the Marche region. Along the route to reach these marvellous caves, one can admire the rolling hills and landscape of the Marche inland. The Frasassi are underground karsts found inside the natural park of Gola della Rossa in the municipality of Genga in the province of Ancona, lovely medieval town, site of a small and legendary castle.

SANCTUARY OF THE MADONNA OF LORETO
Loreto owes its international fame to the Mariano Sanctuary, around which it was developed. From a lovely hill protrudes the majestic silhouette of the Basilica, destination of numerous pilgrimages, built in 1469 by the Bishop of Recanati to protect the celebrated Holy Dwelling where the Virgin Mary was born and lived. Tradition narrates that when the crusades where expelled by the Palestines, a group of angels took the Dwelling and flew it first to Illiria and then to the territory of Loreto, and it is for this reason that the Madonna of Loreto is worshipped as the "Patron of Aviators". Archaeological studies confirm the place of origin of the dwelling, both for its style and constructive materials used at the time in Terrasanta, therefore not known in the Marche territory, furthermore, the dimensions of the dwelling coincide with those of the "hole" left in Nazareth where it was first found.

CASTLE OF GRADARA
The suggestive Castle of Gradara recounts, through its walls, ancient exploitations and unforgettable passion. Rising like a green island among the Marche hills, only a few kilometers from the town of Cattolica, the Fortress is a superb example of military architecture from the 14th century. Its construction most likely dates back to the 12th century, with the lords of Gradara, but the various feudatories that followed, among which the Malatesta, the Sforozi and the Della Rovere, embellished the internal halls, collecting different works of art, not limiting themselves only to the increase of military powers and defences.
Inside the castle one can admire an armoury, a torture chamber, and a chapel with a terracotta by Andrea della Robbia while, on the upper floor, the environments are adorned with original pieces of furniture from the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

MONASTERY OF FONTE AVELLANA
Constructed around the year 1000, this monastery, cited by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy, is surrounded by a beautiful lawn where, in warmer weather, it is an enjoyable place to have a picnic. Situated on a small mountainous tract dominating a green valley, the spot is very suggestive, sometimes prevailed over by the peak of Mount Catria.
The quietness that reigns in the monastery is also present along the road to get there; about 13 kilometers from the town of Pergola near the township of Serra Sant'Abbondio in the province of Pesaro-Urbino, leading towards the Apennine range at the confines of Umbria.

URBINO
Urbino is situated on two hills with an amazing panorama. The communal territory includes various quarters only a few hundred meters from the beautiful historical center (named by the "Unesco Patrimonio dell'Umanita") whose extension runs just over a square kilometer.
The township has very ancient origins, even though nothing precise is known about its first inhabitants, but recent archaeological findings confirm the presence of a dwelling dating back to around the 4th century B.C.

The Fortress of Albornoz could be a good starting point when visiting Urbino just as could the Porta Valbona, from where in a very short time one can reach the main square and beating heart of Urbino.

Among the monuments worth visiting are: the Ducal Palace, characterized by the turrets that surround the rear of it; Raffaello's native house, found on the via of the same name at number 57, where one can admire a fresco as well as the furnished rooms where the celebrated painter lived; the Monument of Raffaello, statue in bronze done by the sculptor Luigi Belli in 1897 found on the Pian del Monte in the panoramic piazza Roma; the neoclassic Duomo, done by architect Giuseppe Valadier, that contains canvas paintings by Federico Barocci; the Egyptian Obelisk, in front of the Church of San Domenico, whose origins date back to about 580 B.C.
