On August 6th 1798, General Humbertâ??s Army of Ireland sailed from La Rochelle in three frigates; La Concorde; La Franchise; La Médée. In total carrying 1025 French troops, 3 light field cannons, 3000 muskets, and 400 swords.
This tiny force, together with its Irish allies, was to conduct an extraordinary campaign that shook the British Empire.
For 16 days they sailed taking a circuitous route to avoid detection by the English navy.
