About Archaeological Museum of Thasos
The first building of the Archaeological Museum of Thasos was erected in 1934. A new wing is being under construction since 1990.
The Archaeological Museum of Thasos contains three main collections of
* sculpture
* pottery
* architectural members
The most important exhibits of the Museum are:
Clay amphora from Kastri. Hand-made vessel found at the prehistoric settlement of Kastri. Dated to the Neolithic period.
Cycladic plate (pinakion) depicting the hero Bellerephon on his winged horse Pegasus, slaying the three-headed Chimaira with his spear. The technique of the painting and the multi-coloured effect point to the conclusion that the decoration was under the influence of the monumental painting. Dated to the 7th century B.C.
Inscription from the monument of Glaukos in the Agora. Glaukos was the friend of the famous poet Archilochus of Paros. He took part in the expedition of the Parians for the foundation of trading ports on the coast opposite Thassos. Dated to the 7th century B.C.
