Wittmund is a town and the capital of the district Wittmund, in Lower Saxony, Germany.
Wittmund is a town of 21,000 inhabitants located in Germany's historic coastal district of East Frisia, just between the cities of Aurich and Jever. It spreads over an area of 52,000 acres which make it one of the largest municipalities in Lower Saxony. While downtown Wittmund is about 9 miles off the North Sea coast, the little port suburb Harlesiel is the starting point for ferry rides to the island of Wangerooge. Harlesiel is named after the Harle, a little river that both springs and ends within Wittmund's city limits. (A siel is a closeable hole in a levee. At low-tide the water from the river may flow into the ocean.)
