Welcome to the Weymouth Canoe Lifeguards, United Kingdom. The unit was formed in 1968 by a group of keen paddlers based at Weymouth's Youth Activity Centre (YAC) - now the Weymouth Outdoor Education Centre (WOEC).
The Weymouth Canoe Lifeguards unit provides safety cover for events all over the country and patrols Weymouth beach throughout the busy summer period. The members regularly train to maintain a high standard in disciplines such as first aid, swimming, and canoe skills.
Members of the Weymouth Canoe Lifeguards provide lifeguard and first aid cover on Weymouth beach and at special events throughout the year, such as sea swims, swimming galas, Model Boat Festival, Trawler Race Day and Victorian Show Night.
The Unit's equipment is funded entirely by donations, sponsorship and various fund raising activities. Donations and other contributions are always gratefully received.
Being a Canoe Lifeguard Unit, our training is very much structured around the BCU awards, although we are also affiliated to both the RLSS and SLSA. In previous years we work very much towards RLSS qualifications as opposed to SLSA, however, since the introduction of the RNLI Beach Lifeguards on many Dorset and Conish beaches the emphasis has shifted and many lifeguards feel it is imperative to focus more heavily on the NARS Beach Lifeguard award.
Our training is divided into summer and winter, with the emphasis in winter being on fitness and updates to technical issues.
Within Weymouth we encourage plenty of ongoing training. The summer months are easily catered for, with trainers and lifeguards alike taking part in operational duty. The longer dark winter months sees the theatrical skills, of unit thespians as they feign catastrophic injuries, with oodles of blood pouring from lovingly prepared plasticine moulds.
