The North Iceland Symphony Orchestra

The North Iceland Symphony Orchestra in Akureyri, Akureyri, Iceland | Opera House

The North Iceland Symphony Orchestra holds, on average, 5-7 concerts each season, not including those in the school concert series, which are held in elementary schools all over the north of Iceland. The musicians come from all over the country but the kernel of the orchestra, from the time of its foundation, comprises of teachers from the Akureyri Music School and a group of musicians living and working in the country districts of north Iceland.
The North Iceland Symphony Orchestra, held its first concert on 24 October 1993 and has therefore now commenced its 15th season. The aim of the orchestra is to enrich musical life and awareness for people of all ages living in areas outside the capital, Reykjavík, thus supporting a more varied life-style, musical culture and development. The orchestra has held many concerts in Akureyri and the north, and performances have also been given in western and eastern regions of country. For many of these concerts the orchestra has joined forces with choirs and soloists, both vocal and instrumental. For the past two years, The North Iceland Symphony Orchestra has participated in concerts in the east of Iceland and in September 2005, a declaration of intent was signed by the orchestra and the Ecclesiastical and Cultural Center in Eskifjörður. The document declared the intention of both parties to cooperate in the performance of music, thus providing the inhabitants of both East and North an opportunity to

utilize their artistic and creative skills.
