Hays is located in Ellis County, Kansas, near the intersection of Interstate 70 and U.S. Highway 183. It is the largest city in Northwest Kansas with a population over 20 000 inhabitants. Hays City was established in 1867 as the Union Pacific Railway Eastern Division. The community was named after nearby Fort Hays (in the memory of Gen. Alexander Hays).
