Friends of Holbrook Island Sanctuary in Brooksville, Maine welcomes you to visit Holbrook Island Sanctuary bordering Penobscot Bay and explore and enjoy the many different ecosystems that are protected here. There are old volcanoes, beaches and mud flats, rocky coasts and steep hills as well as a diversity of plant and animal life including forests and old fields, marshes and ponds, spruce-fir, pine, and mixed hardwoods, wetlands and meadows, a multitude of colorful wildflowers and so much more. A bird list is available at the sanctuary headquarters and there are nesting great blue herons and ospreys, bald eagles and peregrine falcons flying over to name but a few. Holbrook Island Sanctuary is unique with a network of old roads, paths and animal trails and visitors can experience a natural environment shaped by natural forces rather than modern park facilities.
