Auk Island Winery

Auk Island Winery in Twillingate, Newfoundland, Canada | Winery

Welcome to the Auk Island Winery, Twillingate, Canada. The Auk Island Winery is located in the old Durrell's Academy in Durrell's Arm, South Twillingate Island. Built in 1952, hundreds of school children passed through its doors and many fond memories and lifelong friendships were forged here before it closed in 1991. The building was used for a time as an adult learning centre before it was converted into a Winery.

Today, our friendly staff take visitors on tours of the Winery, leaving plenty of time to browse through the Winery gift shop and the Downhome Shoppe of wonderful items from Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Auk Island Winery can provide individual tours year-round and in most cases can accommodate requests made without reservations during the summer season. Because of scheduling and wine production periods, we do recommend calling ahead in the off-season to ensure you won't be disappointed.

Auk Island Winery is named in remembrance of the Great Auk that became extinct in 1844. It was the original Penguin and was found in great numbers around Notre Dame Bay and the Funk Islands.he Great Auk stood around two feet tall and gathered its food by diving deep into the ocean to catch fish in its bill. The auks were very agile swimmers, but were clumsy and vulnerable on land. The Great Auk nested in large colonies. Each nesting pair could produce only one egg a year, which was incubated on bare rock.
