Welcome to Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum, Alexandria, United States . From handcrafted wood boats to grand hotels and private fishing clubs, the Minnesota lakes have a rich and colorful maritime and resorting tradition reaching back nearly a century and a half.  In late 1995, a group of visionary citizens - Alexandria residents and long-time summer residents alike – formed the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum. They recognized the value of these lake traditions and legacies, and the need to preserve for future generations the memories that make Minnesota so special.

Our vision includes securing and displaying existing collections and documenting traditions through artifacts and memorabilia. The Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum opened its doors to the public in May of 2007. This new Museum, with architecture reminiscent of the old Grand Hotels, is where Minnesota’s maritime and resorting past can be preserved, honored and celebrated. A major fundraising effort is now underway to raise a total of $2,500,000. We ask you to consider making a contribution to the Museum and Help Save Our Legacy!

M.M. “Bud” Peterson Gallery

The history of Alexandria Boat Works, a builder of wood fishing boats, runabouts and launches is interpreted in this exhibit.  The Gar Wood exhibit outlines his intriguing life from his youth in Osakis, Minnesota to his adult years as a successful inventor, industrialist, boat racer and boat builder. The Museum has several Gar Wood boats on display.  Also in this gallery is a wide selection of classic wood boats including Alexandria Boat Works and craft from other Minnesota manufacturers.

M.M. "Bud" Peterson Gallery  The Summer Porch - Minnesouri Club Exhibit.  At one time Minnesota was home to hundreds of fishing clubs. These clubs were as much for fishing as they were social clubs. Over the years most of these clubs have disappeared. The Minnesouri Club exhibit highlights the club’s history on Lake Miltona. It is still in existence today!
