A rare combination of authentic exquisitely prepared regional Italian dishes and unmatched service.  Visitors to Mancys Italian are greeted by the Statue of Liberty, just as it welcomed the grandparents of Gus, John Jr, George Jr, and Michael Mancy to America in the early 1900s. Katherine Costantino Licata, maternal grandmother of Gus, John Jr., and George Jr. Mancy, came to this country from her native Italy in 1927. Gus J. Mancy, paternal grandfather of the four young Mancy's, immigrated to America from his native Greece in 1916. Imagine the excitement, tempered by anxiety and fear, when Mrs. Licata and Mr. Mancy first saw the symbol of American Freedom and hope standing in New York harbor.

Mancys Italian testimony that Mrs. Licata's widespread reputation as a cook who excelled in the foods and her native Italy obviously was passed on to her grandsons.  One of Toledo's most beloved and respected restauranteurs, Mr. Mancy opened his first restaurant—the Commercial—in 1918 in downtown Toledo, where SeaGate Centre now stands. He opened the Ideal, on the site of the present Mancys Italian: 937 Phillips Avenue, in 1921.  Mr. Mancy's grandchildren were his greatest joy and the fact that his grandsons followed him in the restaurant industry was a pride he enjoyed before his death.

Mrs. Licata and Mr. Mancy were two of the 12 million men, women, and children who came here during America's greatest migration. Their names are inscribed on the Ellis Island roll of honor.  We can all be thankful that Toledo was the final destination of these courageous immigrants, and that the family's love and appreciation for outstanding food and hospitality they instilled in their grandsons can be enjoyed by Mancys Italian customers today, and by generations to come.
