Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance, Los Angeles County, United States | Park

The Madrona Marsh Preserve in Torrance is the last remaining vernal marsh in Los Angeles County . A vernal marsh is a depression flooded by runoff water from surrounding upland slopes. Vernal means spring, thus by connotation themarsh is fed by winter and spring storms. After the rainy season passes, evaporation, percolation and transpiration reduce the water depth by about one fourth inch per day. By the end of August, the wetland of Madrona Marsh Preserve,is dry and remains dry until the next rainy season.

The Friends of Madrona Marsh is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserve the Madrona Marsh Preserve. They are involve in creating, sponsoring, and conducting various activities to promote the preservation of the marsh. Members and volunteers also assist in tours and different projects of the Torrance Parks and Recreation.

The Friends of Madrona Marsh is the backbone of the Madrona Marsh Preserve for more than thirty years.
