Leikfelag Akureyrar in Akureyri, Akureyri, Iceland | Theatre

Leikfelag Akureyrar is one of the three leading institutions on the Icelandic theater scene and the only professional theater company outside of Iceland's capital city. Its history goes back almost a century. The theater is in the heart of Akureyri in a newly renovated theater which seats 210 spectators. The company performs regularly in other spaces in Akureyri as well as in Reykjavik. Through the decades the repertoire has been varied: Classical Icelandic and foreign plays, Icelandic and foreign modern work, children's plays and musicals. Each year the company stages four to seven productions independently or in collaboration with other companies as well as producing numerous shorter performances and programs. The company aims for an even wider collaboration with other companies at home and abroad in the coming years. A great number of new Icelandic writing has been premiered at Leikfelag Akureyrar and its artists regularly work with authors on developing new works. The size of the permanent ensemble is from four to eleven in addition to a great number of actors contracted on project basis.
Spectators come from the whole of Iceland to see the company's productions which have received numerous awards. In addition to the production side, Leikfelag Akureyrar puts a heavy emphasis on theater education for children and youngsters and works closely with schools on designing courses and workshops.
