L'Empordà
~ Land of dreams

If you have never been to the regions of Alt Empordà, then we must start by explaining that the word that best defines them is diversity. Don´t expect to find one landscape, one light, one vegetation?what you will fins is a multitude of changing landscapes, evolving as you advance in one direction or another. Like a kaleidoscope, your senses will receive an avalanche of sensations, shapes, colours. And not only your eyes-your ears, your nose, your skin and your heart will absorb a multitude of impacts capable of producing the most pleasant emotions and the most diverse experiences.

Cadaqués

This is the most easterly town on the Costa Brava and the Iberian peninsula.Access is by way of a particularly beautiful winding road crossing the Cap de Creus natural park. The views over the ? Bahía de Roses? are especially interesting.Cadaqués is a picturesque down situated in the bay of Cadaqués,with a natural port protected from the north winds. The silhouette of the parish church of Santa Maria rises from the highest point of the town. This church, begun at the beginning of c.XVI,is largely of gothic style. The front part of the church is from the c.XVII.The façade is crowned by a tiny square based campanile, with a pretty octagonal top.The baroque altarpiece, watched over by the image of the Virgin Mary and Saint Thomas,is considered the most notable in l´Empordà.

~ Castelló d'Empúries

Castelló d´Empúries, a medieval town which became the residence for the Counts of Empúries, and was capital of the county from the XI century,is today a town where time appears to have stood still.Castelló d´Empúries was a strategically situated enclave with a walled precint of which only one of the seven gates remains,? El Portal de la Gallarda?.Santa Maria church, which bears the sobriquet of ? la Catedral de l´Empordà?.The Counts of Castelló wanted the town to house the Episcopal seat of l´Empordà,which explains the church´s monumental proportions, and it is considered one of the most important monuments in the province of Girona. It is an excellent example of Catalan gothic, with an impressive façade ( c.XV) of six stone archivolts.Inside, the organ, funerary sculptures, the gothic main altarpiece and the baroque altarpiece in the Los Dolores chapel are of particular interest.Castelló still retains its medieval street plan,so a walk through its streets is very enjoyable, visiting the plaza of ? Joc de la Pilota?,the old Palacio de les Condes, the convent? Sant Doménec?,la plaza del Grano, the prison, the idyllic public laundry, the Curia and ? Call Jueu?.

~ Perelada

The history of Perelada dates back to approximately 500 b.C, when members of the Iberian tribe called the Indigetes built the first walled town on this site. In the 9th Century the town was the centre of one of the most important counties in the Carolingian Empire and became a significant town of the Ampurdan during the Middle Ages. The medieval town structure is still well preserved today and is reflected in the ancient street names.
