Peru, the seat of several prominent Andean civilizations, most notably the Incas, lies in South America bordering the South Pacific Ocean. It offers the most spectacular and varied scenery in South America - the Peruvian Andes, arguably the most beautiful on the continent, are home to indigenous highland Indians who still speak the ancient tongue of Quechua and maintain a traditional way of life. Peru is a trekkers paradise. A remote slope of Nevado Mismi, a 5,316 m peak, is the ultimate source of the Amazon River. A highlight is definitely the Inca Trail to the world-renown Inca city Machu Picchu. The hike takes place on part of the 23,000 kilometers (approximately 14,000 miles) of roads built by the Incas in South America. Visit ancient settlements built in granite rock by the Incas like Wiñay Wayna and Phuyupatamarca which lie immersed in the overpowering natural scenery. The lush Amazon Rain Forest teeming with animals, the pleasant touristy town of Cuzco, the bustle of capital city, Lima, and the Peruvians themselves, are other highlights. Peru occupies 2,414 kilometres of coastline and offers a host of beaches and aquatic activities. Surf in Chicama, the world's longest wave, windsurf, scuba and more. Peru shares control of Lago Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, with Bolivia. The lake is so large it has waves. Lago Titicaca (Lake Titicaca) was very sacred to the Incas. According to legend, the lake gave birth to the Inca civilization. Before the Incas, the lake and its islands were holy for the Aymará Indians, whose civilization was centered on Tiahuanaco, now a complex of ruins on the Bolivian side of Titicaca. It was a revered temple site with notably advanced irrigation techniques.
