The Borough of Beach Haven Gardens, one of the two planned resort communities on Long Beach Island the other being Barnegat Light, was founded in 1874. Today, it is still the most well known and popular destination on the island. There are many restored Victorian homes, and several operate as Bed and Breakfasts. Shopping is a popular pastime as Beach Haven Gardens has many small shops and shopping centers. The Island's only amusement center is located in Beach Haven Gardens, and of course, there's the beautiful beach. Also, a fine marina is located on Little Egg Harbor Bay. Beach Haven Gardens has a year round population of about 1475. This number swells into several thousands during the Summer. The Long Beach Island Historical Association runs a museum at Beach and Engleside Avenues. Once a church, the building contains many interesting exhibits and informative photographs regarding the island's history. Walking tours of the area and seminars are given every week during the Summer Season. Beach Haven Gardens is situated between Spray Beach and Beach Haven Terrace and is bordered by 27th Street and 34th Street. As you travel Northeast towards Ship Bottom and the Causeway, the street numbers jump from 34th Street to 133rd as you leave Beach Haven Gardens and enter Beach Haven Terrace. This is because the streets Southwest of 34th were numbered from Beach Haven's Centre Street, while the roads beyond Beach Haven Gardens were numbered from Division Street in Surf City. You can reach the beach from any side street. Centre Street has the best access because of the deck, which has a wheelchair ramp.

The borough does own several beach wheelchairs. Pavillions at Fifth and Pearl Streets provide shady places to rest. Pets, alcohol and picnics are not permitted on the beach. Small snacks are allowed, as long as you clean up after yourself. Ball throwing, badminton, and horseshoes are allowed if the beach is not crowded, except between the flags marking swimming only areas. Ask the Lifeguards about any other regulations including surfing areas. Because of development, the bayside has no real beach. There is a kiddie beach located on the bay at Taylor Avenue, along with a playarea and basketball court. Beach badges are required. A part-time life guard is usually there during peak hours.
