Kahuku is a community and a census-designated place (CDP) in the Koʻolauloa District on the Island of Oʻahu, City & County of Honolulu. In Hawaiian, ka huku means "the projection", presumably a reference to Kahuku Point nearby, the northernmost point of land on the island of Oʻahu. As of the 2000 Census, Kahuku had a total population of 2,097.
The ZIP Code for Kahuku is 96731—a fact that became well-known in the mid-1970s when a popular television game show, The Diamond Head Game, was contested on the grounds of Del Webb's Kuilima Hotel (today known as the Turtle Bay Resort), located there. At the end of each show the announcer would say, "If you plan to be in HawaiÊ»i, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Diamond Head Game, Kahuku, OÊ»ahu 96731." The Fox TV Series, North Shore, was filmed there recently.
Kahuku High School is ranked nationally in the United States for football and is currently (as of 2007) leading in the nation for the most active NFL players from a single high school.
Kahuku students have placed in the top ten spots in the nation in academic contests that include History Day and We the People. The school's marching band put the high school on the map after local celebrity Larry Price declared the organization "The Pride of the North Shore". Vocal Motion, the school's show choir, consistently sweeps competitions at national venues. For the past two years, students from the school have won the top photography portfolio category in the Scholastic Arts competition, the state's most competitive art contest for high school students. Altogether, students at the school received recognition in 25 national contests, more than any other public school in Hawaii, as measured by a comparison of submissions at the Department of Education's annual luncheon recognition program.
A more notable Kahuku student is musician Jack Johnson, who attended Kahuku High School and graduated in 1993. Other well known graduates include renowned Chef Sam Choy, public figure Earl Anzai, and award winning surfer Pancho Sullivan.
Among tourist attractions in Kahuku are the numerous shrimp trucks parked alongside the Kamehameha highway. Kahuku is home to several purpose-built inland shrimp farms, which resemble cranberry bogs but are filled with saltwater to raise the shrimp. Typically, each shrimp truck will be parked next to such a farm, selling both raw and cooked shrimp to the public.
