Township was declared in 2000. It is home to Hurtigruten. The local hospital for the Vesterålen region is situated in Stokmarknes.

Stokmarknes is the home town of the Norwegian rock and roll band Madrugada, and the home town of the Coastal Express Museum.

Hurtigruten has its roots from this little town, and here you find the Hurtigruten museum with the Hurtigruten ship "MS Finnmarken". A popular and interesting visit for the Hurtigruten passengers and other visitors. The famous fjord Trollfjorden is visited on the Hurtigruten voyage from Stokmarknes in Vesterålen to Svolvær in Lofoten.
