The market district of Kaltern has a total of 8 various districts: The “Dorf” (village center) is the essential hub of the town, above which is to be found Mitterdorf. St. Anton/Pfuss and St. Nikolaus lie at the foot of the Mendola Mountain. To the south is the hamlet of Altenburg, situated on a high plateau. On the western edge of the lake lies the straggling settlement of St. Josef and Oberplanitzing and Unterplanitzing are situated next to the village border line with Eppan.
It is unclear whether the lingual origin of Caldaro is Goth or Latin. It is safe to say that the German spellings with the initial letter K gradually began to assert themselves in the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries. There is only conjecture about the meaning of the word. One theory states that the kettle derivation (lat. caldarium) has given its name to the area. The Kaltern coat of arms also makes reference to it: it depicts a copper kettle on a silver background.
The economic structure of Kaltern is widely diversified and it is characterized by medium sized businesses. These are, in the most part, family run. The most important revenue earner is tourism. In 2004, Kaltern welcomed 413,121 guests. The majority of the residents work in the service industries, above all in tourism. Second place is occupied by the fruit and wine industry, followed by trade, commerce and the service industry.
