When you choose to visit Naples, you should know that it is the largest city within southern Italy and is also the capital of the Campania Region. The city has a population of about 1 million, where added along with the suburban area, the population rises to more than 3.5 million residents. The city can be found on the map, halfway between the Vesuvius volcano and another volcanic area called the Campi Flegrei. An interesting fact regarding the city is that Napoli is credited with being the place where pizza originated from. The pizza was said to be created in honor of the Italian flag, where the cheese, tomato and basil representing the flag’s red, white and green colors. Besides the many pasta dishes that the city has perfected, it is also home to gelato, which is not exactly ice cream, but flavored iced milk. When you are ready to explore the many attractions that await you throughout and surrounding Naples City, you will not be disappointed. If you are a lover of the outdoors, you may want to visit La Villa Comunale, which was formerly a royal park. A beautiful and intriguing aquarium can be found here, which may be the oldest throughout Europe. When you reach the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli, you will encounter a large collection of Roman artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Some of greatest surviving Roman statues can be found at this location as well. When visiting The Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte, works of art created by Michelangelo, Raphael and Botticelli are ready to open your eyes. For the performing arts buff, you will find Teatro di San Carlo a nice addition to your itinerary. It is the oldest active opera house that can be found throughout Europe. If you are planning a trip to Naples Italy during the month of May, you may want to check out the Maggio dei Monumenti (May of Monuments), which is delivered by the Council of Naples. Here you can enjoy a variety of events which take place every weekend during the month. Each year brings forth a new theme.

May also features many different exhibits and fairs throughout the city. This is when you can experience a bit if chamber music recitals, concerts, operettas, as well as entertaining performances of classic Neapolitan songs. For the tourist on a budget, you will learn that some of these events are offered for free. As a Tourist to Naples Italy, you should know that when traveling through the main tourist cities, you will not encounter much of a language barrier. You will find that most hotels have English speakers manning their reception desks and it is also not that hard to find someone who speaks at least a bit of English. Be aware that when you enter the countryside, English-speakers become more and more scarce to find. It is wise to have a phrase book handy during these excursions.
