Waterford City is the capital of the Sunny South East of Ireland. A natural playground for Golf, Equestrian, Walking, Angling, Water Sports and Cycling, enthusiasts, Waterford offers the complete holiday experience. The county offers a dazzling coastline, beautiful river valleys and two dramatic ranges of very accessible mountains. Waterford City was established in Viking times and it has an exciting medieval flavour and riverside bustle. In 2005 the City was host to the Tall Ships Race. The City is the home of Waterford Crystal, a lifestyle product of exquisite craftsmanship.

Waterford is the primary city of the South East region. Founded in 914 AD, by the Vikings, it is Ireland's oldest city. It is the fifth largest city in the country of Ireland. The city is situated at the head of Waterford Harbour (Loch Dá Chaoch) or (Cuan Phort Láirge). The city motto Urbs Intacta Manet Waterfordia ("Waterford remains the untaken city") was granted by King Henry VII of England in 1497 after Waterford refused to recognise the claims of the pretenders Lambert Simnel and Perkin Warbeck to the English throne.

Waterford withstood a siege by Cromwell's New Model Army. It later surrendered to Henry Ireton on 6 August 1650.

Waterford is the largest city in Ireland to retain its Viking-derived name, Vedrarfjord. Reginald's Tower is the oldest urban civic building in Ireland, and the oldest monument to retain its Viking name. It is to this day Waterford's most recognisable landmark. The tower is believed to be the first building in Ireland to use mortar.
