Husavik guide

With a population of over 2500, Husavik is the main town of Northeast Iceland. It has a picturesque harbour and snow capped peaks. It is a typical Icelandic town and is known as an award winning whale-watching venue. The area of Husavik is a cetacean paradise. Seeing whales during the season is almost certain. Whales likely to be seen include the Minke Whales, Humpback Whales, Fin Whales, Sei Whales, Orcas, Dolphins and harbour porpoises. The whale watcher boat makes 4 journeys a day, which last for 2 - 3 hours. It also runs bird watching and sea fishing tours to Lundey and Flatey. Lundey is the main location for spotting puffins on the cliffs. Husavik is small but has almost all services including banks and a post office as well as a good choice of cafes and restaurants. Husaviks best dining is set around the harbour. These are mid-range and are awarded for their tasty pan fried haddock and juicy lobster tails.

A nearby attraction is the Jokulsargljufar National Park. Iceland's second largest river (Jokulsa a Fjollum) runs through the park and also flows through the massive Jokulsargljufur, a canyon which is 120 meters deep and 500 meters wide in places, forming several exceptional waterfalls and rock formations. The income of the inhabitants comes from tourism and fishing as well as shops and small industry. Husavik has become a center of whale watching in the north, because whales of different species are often entering the bay. It is home to the Icelandic Phallological Museum, which contains specimens of from every mammal that lives in Iceland. Viking Garðar Svavarsson was the first confirmed human to spend a winter on the island. He gave the island the name Garðarshólmi. A monument near the schoolhouse remembers him. The church of the town dates from the early 20th century. The region of Mývatn with its interesting geology and diverse animal life is nearby. Husavik used to export the silica that was extracted from the lake. Sourced with thanks from En.wikipedia.org/
