Sellin is situated between Binz and Baabe on the eastern coastline of Ruegen. Hilly woodland mostly surrounds the beautiful seaside resort. Its area rises from a large lake to the top of a hill which slopes down steeply to the beach. From this top there is a fantastic view of the Baltic Sea, the sandy beach and the promenade pier that is considered to be one of the most impressive ones of the world. The original pier was destroyed by ice floes during winter of 1942, but was reconstructed in the nineties of the 20th century after German reunification. It reaches a length of nearly 400 metres.
All the ancient hotels, boarding houses and other holiday homes dating from the late 19th and early 20th century, when the German moneyed aristocracy deigned to stay for holidays at this place, have also been restored today. The most remarkable ones among them decorated with towers, colummns and splendidly made balconies line the Wilhelmstraße which is obviously the main street of Sellin. In my opinion, it is the most interesting and most beautiful street within a seaside resort you can find on the island of Ruegen.
Like the neighbouring seaside resort of Binz, Sellin also was a small fishing village in previous times that was first mentioned in a medieval document of the 13th century. At the beginning of this century the attractive holiday resort has about 2500 inhabitants.
