Bremen, home to the world famous Town Musicians, puts itself on the map as the pulsating, multifaceted heart of North West Germany. The waterway, which transformed the Hanseatic city into a proud metropolitan centre, still echoes nautical rhythms and is a magnet for the entire city. Just minutes from the city centre, Schlachte with its wealth of trendy bars, friendly cafes, international restaurants and outdoor seating for some 2,000 people gives almost two million visitors each year plenty to watch over. The quayside is lined with vessels large and small, including a subtle pancake ship, the three-masted frigate Admiral Nelson and a replica cog ship, which typifies a Hanseatic vessel from the 13th and 14th centuries. Some 60km away on the North Sea coast, Bremerhaven holds the key to Northern Germany.

Shopping galore. Shopping in style, and for style, is a Bremen experience – and of course shops and stores in the city centre sit alongside magnificent historical buildings, museums and restaurants, so shopping and sightseeing are easily combined. Extremely manageable in its make-up, Bremen offers some of the most stylish shopping in the region – from exquisite boutiques, clothing and big name department stores to friendly eateries and cultural scenes. A kaleidoscope of possibilities jostles for space in glass-domed malls, historic squares and picturesque walkways. Eventful city. Cologne launches itself into Carnival, while Munich reveres its Oktoberfest. And Bremen? Bremen is a celebrating city – and there is always something going on. For 40 years, the prestigious Bremen 6 Days, which regularly pull in over 125,000 people, have transformed the AWD Dome into a cauldron of indoor cycling excitement in January. Amid a pastiche of samba rhythms and colourful masquerades, Germany’s biggest samba festival creates one of the great free shows on earth in February. In the second half of October, the Freimarkt is Germany’s oldest and third largest civic festival, drawing over four million people to the Bürgerweide, just minutes from the historic city centre.
