Netherlands Antilles info


Netherlands Antilles consist of 2 island groups in the Caribbean Sea. There are 5 islands in total. Curacao and Bonaire are located off the coast of Venezuela, while St. Maarten, Saba, and St. Eustatius lie east of the US Virgin Islands. The different islands of the Netherlands Antilles vary enormously and so do their attractions. Close to Venezuela is the largest of the Netherlands Antilles, Curaçao. It has more European flavour than anywhere else in the Caribbean. With a mixture of 55 different nationalities on the island, Curacao is a fascinating multicultural cosmopolitan mix. Capital Willemstad is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its architecture and classic Dutch-style windmills scattered in and around the town. Close by lies Bonaire which attracts visitors with its superb diving. A Marine Park completely surrounds the island and the 600-hectare offshore cay called Klein Bonaire. These waters feature coral reef teeming with tropical fish and other marine life. In the Leeward Island group, Saba is the unspoiled island in the Netherlands Antilles chain offering impressive ecolodges, beautiful hiking trails and pristine diving. Sint Maarten is an island shared with France. The Dutch side of the island is more developed and beachfront resorts share space with duty-free shopping malls and casinos. However, Sint Maarten also offers the deliciously mellow beach life one expects in the Caribbean. Sint Eustatius (or 'Statia') may lack glorious beaches, but it is a tranquil little outpost. A visit to this island is like stepping back into the Caribbean of the past
