Hartbeespoort Dam on the Crocodile River irrigates 16,000 hectares of intensely cultivated land and provides extensive recreational facilities for Pretoria and Johannesburg. The dam was completed in 1923 and has an adjoining chain of water canals that extend to an impressive 547km of irrigation systems. There are two holiday resorts on the banks of the dam, Schoemanskloof on the northern and Kosmos on the west.
