Capitola Begonia Festival began it's inception when Peggy Matthews a local resident who taught swimming noticed that Begonia flowers were going to waste on the Brown Bulb Ranch because they were only interested in propagating bulbs for market. Peggy was given permission to pick as many flowers as she wanted and that year the Capitola Water Follies featured paddleboards decorated with Begonias, and that is basically how the Begonia Festival got its start. Today the festival is in it's 58th year and attracts many locals and visitors.
