Wow, an art Museum in rural Ystad - in the centre of Europe!
Once upon a time there was a group of enthusiasts who decided to start a collection for an art work to be placed in the centre of town. And when they had finished and Bäckahästen was unveiled they decided to continue with this good work and establish an art Museum, and in 1936, Ystads konst-Museum (Ystad Art Museum) was opened.
Today, new enthusiasts have continued with the good work. From the very beginning it was hoped that the national Museum would provide works and today the Ystad Art Museum boasts an important collection of Swedish and Danish 20th century art including loans, donations and purchases. There are new 21st century works too.
Ystad Art Museum curator Thomas Millroth has succeeded in introducing a totally new public to the Museum by invi-ting unusual performers and exhibitors. His ability to book famous names, such as Sonic Youth 2002, has put Ystad on the European arts map.
