Yowani Country Club

Yowani Country Club in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia | GOLF

Yowani is an aboriginal word meaning ?northern place? and Yowani Country Club is situated at the northern gateway to Canberra, New South Wales, at the junction of the Barton Highway (from Yass and Melbourne) and the Federal Highway (from Goulburn and Sydney) in Australia.
Yowani Country Club was formed in 1954, initially as a GOLF club only. The early years were ones of struggle and the Club owes much to the hard work of its first members, who virtually built the GOLF course (with sand greens) and the Clubhouse (basically ex-army huts) themselves. The fifty odd years since have seen the development of the site into one of Australia?s finest inland courses.
In 1969 the Club was converted into Yowani Country Club with the addition of three first class bowling greens which are considered amongst the best in the ACT. Around the same time a modern Clubhouse was also opened.
In the late seventies the GOLF course was improved to protect it from the floods which often washed out play. Messrs Nagle and Cooper were retained to make the changes to the fairways and greens, and they virtually raised the course out of the water. The man-made lakes have become more of a feature and provide interesting hazards on six holes.
The course provides a great test of GOLF as well as being very picturesque.
It became evident that many visitors were taking a break from sightseeing and combining a game with their visit to the National Capital. Of course, not all the visitors were tourists, some were taking time out from business commitments or were attending seminars, conferences and the like.
It was from these beginnings that an idea of providing accommodation facilities for visitors to Canberra, New South Wales, developed. Yowani Country Club was obviously an ideal base for GOLFers, bowlers, indeed sportsmen of all kinds and their families who had need to or wished to visit Canberra, New South Wales.
No less than five years elapsed from the germ of the idea to its realization, in the form of twelve self contained modern motel type units on 11 April 1986. This has since been expanded to 24 units.
Again in May 2007 the Club completed a reburbishment of the club house including new bar area updated restaurant and function room.
Yowani Country Club offers members and visitors some of the best GOLF and bowling facilities in Canberra, New South Wales, together with modern, self-contained motel accommodation at very reasonable rates.
