As the name suggests, The Wharf is situated on a wharf in a former wharf building. Large windows and French doors make the most of its waterside location. The outlook over the working marina to the hills beyond is equally appealing in daylight and dark, when palm trees across the water are floodlit.
Inside, old beams, terracotta floor tiles and sails stretched across the ceiling convey a sense of simple warehouse chic. There are also tables outside at which to enjoy the sea breezes and balmy Gisborne weather. With two other eateries in the same building, the area is bustling and energised.
While the kitchenâ??s approach is largely European, Asian influences are evident in several dishes.
Appropriately for the â??Chardonnay capitalâ?? of the country, the wine list boasts a specifically Gisborne listing, over half of which are Chardonnay. Service, under the direction of Llewellyn Williams, is personable, informed and attentive, even when busy.
