Welcome to State Darwin Museum in Moscow, Central Federal District, Russia.
In 2009 the world will celebrate a bicentenary of the Charles Darwin?s birthday (the 12th of February, 1809) and 150-year anniversary of the publication of his main manuscript «On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life» (November 24, 1859). It is difficult to overestimate the importance of Darwin?s creative heritage. The concept of evolution constitutes a theoretical basis for all scientific achievements of the modern biology. The publication of the ?On the Origin of Species?? started many discussions among scientists, and after a short time, the book was translated on several European languages. Biologists from different countries worked on the popularization and development of the theory of evolution. The role of Russian scientists in this process was very significant. One can literally say that Russia became a second fatherland for the Darwinism.
In 1907 the State Darwin Museum (SDM) was established in Moscow, Central Federal District, on the initiative of a young Russian scientist, A.F. Kots. In that time this Museum became the first Museum of natural history in the world. How was the theory of evolution developed for the last 150 years? What was changed in this theory during this period? How does the Darwin?s concept of evolution look in the light of the current knowledge? The anniversary program of the State Darwin Museum in Moscow, Central Federal District, is devoted to these questions.
